| 12 fl oz | 10.67 | 5.33 | 5.64 | 8.45 |
| 16.9 fl oz (500 mL) | 7.57 | 3.79 | 4.00 | 6.00 |
| 20 fl oz | 6.40 | 3.20 | 3.38 | 5.07 |
| 24 fl oz | 5.33 | 2.67 | 2.82 | 4.23 |

| 1 L | 3.79 | 1.89 | 2.00 | 3.00 |
The usual small bottle is 500 mL, and a 500 mL bottle is 16.9 US fluid ounces. That's why 16.9 oz is printed on so many labels. It's a metric size shown in ounces, so 16.9 oz and 500 mL are one bottle, not two.
Worked example: 1 US gallon in 500 mL bottles
- 1 US gallon is 3,785.4 mL.
- 3,785.4 ÷ 500 mL = 7.57 bottles.
- That's 7 full bottles and 285 mL (9.7 fl oz) left over, so you would fill 8 bottles in all.
How it works
The converter turns your amount into milliliters, then divides by the size of your bottle. A US gallon is defined as 231 cubic inches, which works out to 3,785.411784 mL (NIST lists it as 3.785 412 liters). A US fluid ounce is that divided by 128, and a US cup is 8 fluid ounces. We took the factors from NIST Special Publication 811. If you pick “16.9 fl oz” as the bottle, the tool treats it as exactly 500 mL.
Which gallon do you mean?
The US gallon is 3.785 L. The UK (Imperial) gallon, used in the UK and Canada, is 4.546 L. In 500 mL bottles that's 7.57 bottles for the US gallon and 9.09 for the UK gallon. The converter defaults to the US gallon and lets you switch.

How this page was built. The bottle converter on Daily Water Calculator was built by Cedrick Reese. Its unit factors come from NIST Special Publication 811, and we checked the quick-answer table above against hand-worked division. The table is generated from the same constants the tool uses, so the two can't drift apart. Bottle labels are rounded, so check your own bottle if you need an exact size. Last reviewed: .
Volumes use US customary units unless you choose the UK gallon. Check your own bottle’s label for its exact size.
